Overview
The Chaishao Tea Pot represents a different expression of traditional ceramic craftsmanship from the raw sculptural character of the Xiangyun collection.
Where Xiangyun leaves its clay deliberately unglazed and focuses on sculpted relief, Chaishao allows the firing process itself to become the primary source of decoration. The natural plant ash interacting with the ceramic creates the characteristic cream and ochre surface, with each firing producing subtle variations in tone, speckling and flow.
This unpredictability is central to the value of the piece. The surface is not painted to imitate a natural effect; it is created through the interaction between wood, ash, heat and ceramic during firing.
The rounded 900 ml body gives the tea pot a generous presence, while the braided suspended handle introduces a contrasting organic texture. The hanging tassel adds movement without overwhelming the restrained ceramic palette.
The result is a substantial handmade tea vessel with a strong material identity, particularly suited to collectors who appreciate traditional firing techniques and naturally occurring ceramic variation.
Details
Traditional Wood Firing
Chaishao refers to 柴烧, a traditional wood firing technique in which the natural ash produced inside the kiln interacts with the ceramic surface during firing.
Natural Ash Glaze
Plant ash creates the glaze naturally, producing the distinctive transition from creamy ivory to warm ochre brown. Each firing develops its own pattern, making every tea pot visually individual.
Handmade in Dehua
The entire piece is handmade, with variations in size, shape, weight and wall thickness naturally occurring from one piece to another.
Braided Suspended Handle
The elevated handle is traditionally braided and finished with a hanging tassel, adding warmth and movement to the rounded ceramic body.
Functional Lid Ventilation
Small openings around the edge of the lid allow ventilation while adding another visible detail to the handcrafted construction.
